Epic moment in science( Discovery of Gravitational Waves)

For so long, scientists were trying hard to find the evidence for Gravitational waves, predicted by Einstein over a 100 years ago, in his “Theory of Relativity”. Finally, scientists at LIGO( Laser Interferometer Gravitational Waves Observatory) detected Gravitational Waves.

Scientists estimate, about 1.3 billion years ago, two black holes  collided at half the speed of light. Which resulted in Gravitational waves. Detector at LIGO detected these waves.

LIGO has two identical detectors, one located in Livingston, Louisiana, the other in Hanford, Washington. These Detectors can detect even very little vibrations from Gravitational Waves.

Learn more about gravitational waves here”Gravitational Waves“. Also about the origin of our universe, cosmic inflation here” Origin of our universe“.

This discovery changes our perspective on how we see the Universe.

Parallel Universes??

Parallel universes are basically alternate realities, where every possible situation happens. Since there are infinite possibilities, there are infinite number of parallel universes.

Let’s see, what’s a Multiverse?

As the name suggests, a group of Universes makes a Multiverse. The Universe we live in,  might not be the only Universe out there. Our universe might be one in the Infinite number of universes out there.

By theory, we have different types of multiverse theories.

  1. Bubble universes
When we say the word Universe, It actually refers to the observable universe, which we can observe or see. Some part cannot be seen because the light don’t reach us from that part. If we assume a boundary or bubble upto which our universe can be observed, then there are many other bubble around our bubble and each have their own Laws of Physics.
Which explains that, we can only exist in the universe that has our laws.
2. Membranes
The Universe in which we live is 3 dimensional. According to string theory this 3 dimensional space is inside a Super universe with 9 dimensions.
This explains that there are still more 3 dimensional portions in the 9 dimensional super universe.
3. The many worlds
This is the fun theory, this theory predicts that there are many worlds and every possible situation is happened in one or the other worlds. There are different time lines for each. If you know the story of the DC Comics character “The Flash” you will understand this better;)

All these concepts are Theories. There is no experimental evidence. For now, we have the evidence for the Inflation. Learn more about that from my previous article Origin of our Universe. So, as always, ” Everything is true until it’s a theory”.

So, don’t let another you, in another universe, do what you don’t do, in this particular universe. which precisely means don’t make yourself regret;)

Damn the cosmology is confusing yet extremely interesting. Before we get deeper, checkout the picture of our universe after 380,000 years of big bang… Wondering where did we get this baby picture of our universe? Let’s talk from the start.

Our universe after 380,000 years of the big bang was so hot that all the subatomic particles like protons, electrons were in a state of plasma moving randomly, even light passing through, was scattered or absorbed, which means the whole universe was opaque. After 380,000 years when the universe was cooled and expanded the electrons and protons are combined and formed hydrogen atoms. So finally after moving randomly for 380,000 years, the photon started to move in space for 13.8 billion years not hitting anything until they reached our detector. This is how, we got this baby image of our Universe.

These photons which started as blue light or visible radiation ended up as microwaves by the time they reached us. These reached us by accident, the first picture was detected by two scientists working on something else and found these signals by accident, but the thing is the image was extremely symmetric. After some advancements in telescopes we finally got the picture shown above.

But the non uniformity is important, due to which there are more dense and less dense places, the higher dense places pull the matter around them. And the massive structures like galaxies are made of this.

So, how could we explain this uniformity, which we first encountered? Well… Scientists have proposed a theory called INFLATION which states that right after the big bang, all of a sudden the universe expanded rapidly. It was said that the time taken was trillionth of a trillionth of a trillionth of a second.

So, how could we prove this freaking theory Inflation? Because, we couldn’t find the light before 138,000 years big bang… May be we couldn’t detect the light but we can detect something else so called ” Gravitational wave “… It is like when we viggle a charge we get electromagnetic radiation, similarly if we viggle a mass we get gravitational waves. These Gravitational waves are extremely weak, it is tough to detect them. If the Inflation really took place and the expansion took place so rapidly and the gravitational waves from that moment would stretch and squeeze all the matter of the early universe.

To do this we need to record the polarization of light on the image we get. That is what the scientists exactly got. This is one of the more precious discoveries in the field of science.

This was the most tough article I wrote, since I started blogging…. Please let me know, what do you think of it….
